LITTLE ROCK (April 14, 2025)— Behind every new animal arrival at the Little Rock Zoo is a story of collaboration, careful planning, and a shared commitment to conservation. Modern zoos don’t work in isolation; they’re part of a global network that works together to ensure the survival of species, both in the wild and in human care.

Animal transfers between accredited zoos are a regular and vital part of this work. Whether it’s a pair of tigers moving across the country in hopes of finding genetically compatible mates, or a rare species traveling overseas to strengthen a zoo population, these carefully coordinated moves are driven by the Species Survival Plan (SSP)—a program that helps maintain healthy, sustainable populations of animals under human care.

That’s exactly how Luz and Paku, two young bush dogs from France, came to call the Little Rock Zoo home.

A Transatlantic Journey for Conservation

Bush dogs are not commonly found in U.S. zoos—only four or five institutions house them nationwide, including Little Rock. When the Zoo’s last bush dog passed in September 2024, the team immediately began working with partners in Europe to identify potential animals to help re-establish a breeding pair.

Through the SSP and collaboration with European conservation organizations, two genetically valuable one-year-old bush dogs were identified:

Paku, a male from Zoo des Sables d’Olonne, and

Luz, a female from Parc Zoologique de Paris.

Once approved, the process began—one that involved months of paperwork, health certifications, permits, and international coordination. Finally, in March 2025, after months of planning and preparation, the two bush dogs were transported to Dallas, Texas, on March 19, 2025, where our staff was waiting for them at the airport.

Though they’d traveled together for hundreds of miles, Paku and Luz hadn’t actually met yet. Once at the Zoo, they were placed in separate dens in the Bear area— where bush dogs at the Little Rock Zoo have been kept for decades—and given the night to settle in and decompress after their journey.

Shortly after, the pair was introduced—and it went better than we could have hoped. Luz, the braver of the two, led the way, with Paku closely following her around as they explored their new environment. They’re continuing to adjust well to their keepers and surroundings. Zoo staff are hopeful that, with time, the pair may contribute to the growth of a genetically healthy bush dog population in North America.

More About Bush Dogs

Bush dogs (Speothos venaticus) are small, wild canids native to Central and South America. Despite their name, they’re more closely related to maned wolves and other South American canines than domestic dogs. These elusive animals live in close-knit packs and are known for their cooperative hunting skills, often taking down prey much larger than themselves. They’re strong swimmers, too, with partially webbed feet that help them navigate flooded forests and rivers.

Because they’re so difficult to spot in the wild, much of what we know about bush dogs comes from observing them in zoos. But field researchers are making strides: teams in South America are now using domestic dogs trained to sniff out bush dog scat to help locate populations in the wild. This work supports the creation of wildlife corridors and protected areas that benefit not only bush dogs, but entire ecosystems.

Unfortunately, habitat loss remains their greatest threat. That’s why global cooperation—including efforts like Luz and Paku’s transfer to Little Rock—is so important to the future of the species.

What to Look For

If you spot our bush dogs during your next visit, you might hear them vocalizing or even see them scent marking—a unique behavior where they appear to do a handstand while raising their hind legs to mark territory. These behaviors offer rare insights into a species that’s still somewhat mysterious in the wild.

As Luz and Paku make themselves at home, we’re proud to be among the few U.S. zoos contributing to the conservation and understanding of this unique species. Be sure to stop by their habitat—located between the Sloth Bears and Otters—on your next visit to the Little Rock Zoo to see these unique animals for yourself.

LITTLE ROCK (April 14, 2025) — Recycling is one of the simplest and most effective actions we can take to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and protect the environment. Every item you recycle helps keep valuable materials out of landfills, saves energy, and cuts down on pollution. By recycling correctly, you’re contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable Little Rock—and a healthier planet.

Whether you’re cleaning out your garage, replacing old electronics, or just sorting the week’s recycling, there are many ways to recycle responsibly in Central Arkansas. Little Rock offers curbside recycling, multiple drop-off centers, and special events to help make your recycling efforts easier and more impactful.

♻️ Best Practices for Curbside Recycling

Curbside recycling is a convenient way to keep recyclable materials out of the trash. But to make a real difference, it’s important to recycle the right way and avoid contamination.

✅ What Can Be Recycled at the Curb

The City of Little Rock accepts the following materials in residential recycling bins:

Paper & Cardboard: Newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail, cereal boxes, and flattened cardboard

Plastics #1, #2, & 5: Primarily bottles, jugs, and tubs (check the triangle symbol)

Metal Cans: Aluminum drink cans, tin and steel food cans

Glass Bottles & Jars: Clear, green, and brown food and beverage containers

📌 When in doubt, check it out: Curbside Recycling 101 – LittleRock.gov

🚫 What NOT to Include

Keep your recycling clean by leaving out these common contaminants:

Plastic grocery bags (recycle separately at drop-off locations)

Greasy pizza boxes (recycle the clean lid, trash the oily bottom)

Food waste or residue

Styrofoam

Tanglers like cords, hoses, or string lights

♻️ Quick Tips for Better Recycling

Rinse, Don’t Scrub: A quick rinse removes food and liquid residue without wasting water.

Flatten Cardboard: Saves space in your bin and on collection trucks.

Leave Caps On: Secure caps on plastic bottles and jugs to ensure they get recycled.

Avoid Wish-Cycling: If you’re unsure if something’s recyclable, it’s better to leave it out and research how best to dispose of it.

♻️ The Green Station: A Hidden Gem for Little Rock Recycling

Not sure what to do with broken electronics, or dead batteries? The Green Station is your go-to spot for recycling items that don’t belong in your curbside bin—and it’s conveniently located just seven minutes from the Zoo!

This dedicated facility accepts a wide range of harder-to-recycle household items, including:
• Household hazardous waste (like cleaning chemicals, and pesticides)
• E-waste (computers, TVs, cords, and more)
• Plastic grocery bags
• Light bulbs and household batteries

📍 Location: 2000 S Thayer Street
🕒 Hours: Monday–Thursday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.
Last Saturday of each month, 7 a.m.–1 p.m.

📌 Need More Info? Little Rock Green Station – LittleRock.gov

💡 Please Note: The Green Station is NOT for everyday recyclables like cardboard, plastic bottles, or metal cans. For those, visit one of the Recycling Centers detailed below.

📱 Cell Phone Recycling at the Zoo

As an avid Zoo fan you’ve probably already heard about our participation in a special program called Gorillas on the Line.

The Little Rock Zoo is working with Eco-Cell to recycle cell phones, help the environment, and raise money for gorilla conservation. Zoos and aquariums across the continent will be collecting mobile phones for gorilla conservation!

Why are we collecting cell phones for gorillas?

Many handheld electronics are made with coltan, which is mined in wild gorilla habitat. So, recycling old phones/electronics helps to decrease the need for new mining. At the same time, recycling raises money to directly support gorilla conservation initiatives through Gorilla SAFE programs. All proceeds from donated devices sent to Eco-Cell will be sent to the Gorilla SAFE program. Money raised will help with habitat protection, monitoring, education about gorilla conservation and more! Join us to help save gorillas in the wild!

By recycling your old phones and tablets, you help reduce the demand for new mining, protect critical ecosystems, and contribute to global conservation efforts—all from right here in Little Rock.

Accepted at the Zoo for the Gorillas on the Line Program:

Cell phones

Tablets

Apple Watches and handheld gaming devices

Drop off your old cell phones, tablets, and small devices at the drop box in the front entry plaza and contribute to wild gorilla conservation at the same time. Tickets are not required to drop off devices. Devices are collected all year long!

❌ Please do not bring other electronics—take those to the Green Station.

🌎 Make a Difference with Every Item

Recycling is more than a chore—it’s a choice to care for your community and planet. Whether you’re sorting recyclables at home, dropping off electronics at the Green Station, or joining a recycling event at the Zoo, every action counts.

Start making a difference today. Together, we can build a greener Little Rock—one recycled item at a time.

LITTLE ROCK (April 3, 2025) – April is Autism Awareness Month, and at the Little Rock Zoo, we are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our guests. We understand that some visitors may experience sensory sensitivities, and we strive to make the Zoo as accessible and enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Certified Sensory Inclusive

Since 2023, the Little Rock Zoo has been officially certified as Sensory Inclusive through KultureCity, a leading nonprofit that helps organizations create accommodating spaces for individuals with sensory sensitivities. This certification means our staff has been trained to assist guests who may need additional support during their visit. We are proud to be working toward our third year of certification, ensuring that we maintain and improve our commitment to accessibility.

Sensory Bags for Guests

To help guests who may need additional resources, we offer sensory bags at the Zoo. These bags contain helpful tools such as noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, and verbal cue cards to help create a more comfortable experience. These items can be especially beneficial in areas that may have louder noises or higher levels of activity. Guests can check out sensory bags in the Gift Shop at the front of the Zoo.

For Calli and her son, these resources made all the difference during their Spring Break 2025 visit to the Zoo. Calli was overjoyed to discover that the Zoo offers KultureCity tools for free that allow her son to enjoy the Zoo at his own pace and in his own way. Stories like this inspire us to continue improving and expanding our sensory-friendly offerings.

Sensory Signage Throughout the Zoo

Some areas of the Zoo can be more stimulating than others, which is why we have placed sensory signage throughout the park. These signs help guests identify spaces that may be louder or more crowded, as well as quiet zones where they can take a break if needed. By providing clear guidance, we aim to make it easier for visitors to navigate the Zoo in a way that best suits their comfort level.

Social Story for Trip Planning

Planning ahead can make a big difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit. To assist with this, we offer a social story available on our website. This resource provides a step-by-step guide on what to expect when visiting the Zoo, helping guests familiarize themselves with the environment before they arrive. Families and caregivers can use this tool to prepare their loved ones for a fun and stress-free experience.

At the Little Rock Zoo, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the wonders of wildlife. Whether it’s through our sensory-friendly resources or our ongoing commitment to inclusivity, we are proud to support all our guests in having a memorable visit.

LITTLE ROCK (March 10, 2025) – Spring break is the perfect time to visit the Little Rock Zoo! With warmer weather, longer days, and animals becoming more active, it’s an exciting season to explore. Whether you’re planning a family outing or a solo adventure, here are some of the best tips to make the most of your visit.

1. Plan Ahead

Spring break is here, and that means it’s one of the busiest times at the Zoo! To make the most of your visit, plan ahead and arrive early to beat the crowds. Mornings are when animals are most likely to be active, so you won’t want to miss seeing them in action!

Just a heads up: be prepared for some lines and wait times, especially at the start of the day. Our awesome staff will be working hard to get everyone in as quickly as possible, so we appreciate your patience!

Members: Enjoy the perks of an express check-in process, allowing you to skip the general admission lines! Just remember to present your membership and personal ID at the Membership window.

Not a Member? Purchase a Membership Today!

Zoo Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM | Last Admission: 3:30 PM

2. Keep Your Group Together

Nothing puts a damper on a great day like getting separated from your group! Before arriving at the Zoo, snap a quick picture of your kids or group members so you have a recent photo to show Zoo staff if needed. Pro tip: Groups wearing matching outfits or colors are easier to spot, making it faster to reunite if someone wanders off!

Additionally, you can write your phone number on a wristband for your kids—allowing Zoo staff to get in touch with you in the event they become separated from your group. Wristbands will be available at stations in the entry plaza or ask the ticket attendant for one when purchasing your tickets at the gate.

3. Stoller and Scooter Rentals

Need a little help getting around? The Safari Trader Gift Shop offers stroller and scooter rentals to make your visit more comfortable and convenient. Available on a first come- first serve basis.

View Rental Pricing

4. Map Out the Fun

Check out the Zoo Map before you arrive and plan your must-see exhibits. Knowing your top priorities will help you maximize your time. Don’t forget to take breaks to cool off and stay hydrated!

Café Africa, the Cheetah Outpost Building, and sections of the Reptile House are equipped with air conditioning, providing you with a comfortable place to relax and cool off.

View the Zoo Map

5. Pack Smart and Plan Ahead

Be prepared for a full day of outdoor fun! Since the Zoo is an outdoor venue, check the weather forecast ahead of time and dress accordingly. Feel free to bring a reusable water bottle, we have several water stations for refilling throughout the Zoo.

Don’t forget these essentials:

Sunscreen

Reusable water bottles

Sunglasses

Comfortable walking shoes

A hat or lightweight jacket (spring weather can be unpredictable!)

6. Catch an Animal Keeper Chat or Feeding

Learn more about your favorite animals and enhance your experience by attending a keeper chat or feeding demonstration. These sessions provide fascinating insights into the animals’ behaviors, diets, and conservation efforts.

View the Daily Schedule

7. Take Advantage of Photo Opportunities

Spring’s bright, natural lighting makes it the perfect time for photos! Capture stunning shots of the animals, beautiful blooming flowers, and fun family moments throughout the Zoo.

8. Visit Interactive Areas

Visit the Arkansas Heritage Farm and immerse yourself in a taste of farm life! This hands-on exhibit lets you get up close with some of our animal residents while learning about heritage breeds. It’s a fantastic stop for kids and adults alike to enjoy a personal connection with animals. Just remember to follow the posted rules and only feed animals food from the provided feeders, please!

After exploring the farm, be sure to check out other attractions, including the Train and the Historic Carousel, offering unique experiences for the whole family!

Train & Carousel Rides: $3.00 per person / $2.00 for Members.

9. Enjoy Seasonal Treats

All that exploring works up an appetite! Stop by Café Africa or a snack stand for a tasty treat. Keep an eye out for special seasonal menu items to make your spring break visit even more delicious!

View the Café Menu

10. Respect the Animals

While exploring, please follow Zoo guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for everyone, including our animal residents! That means staying on pathways, avoiding tapping on glass, and never feeding the animals. Also, remember to keep voices low—yelling or making loud noises can stress the animals and cause them to retreat. Staying calm and quiet is the best way to observe animals and make the most out of your visit!

LITTLE ROCK (March 6, 2025) – We’ve all seen it: a drawer or box filled with old electronics—smartphones, chargers, music players, and more. While these items might seem harmless, they contribute to the growing issue of electronic waste (e-waste), one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally.

E-waste includes everything from broken televisions to outdated laptops, and much of it ends up in landfills. Improper disposal can release harmful substances, like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which leach into the environment and pose serious risks to wildlife. As these toxic chemicals seep into soil and water, they can harm ecosystems—including those that support endangered species like gorillas.

The Hidden Impact of E-Waste on Gorilla Conservation

Though it might not seem obvious, e-waste directly affects wildlife, including gorillas. Found in the forests of Africa, gorillas rely on a delicate balance in their environment. Unfortunately, habitat destruction, poaching, and pollution are significant threats to their survival, and e-waste only adds to these challenges.

The accumulation of electronic devices in landfills, particularly in developing countries, contaminates local habitats. As these areas become polluted, gorillas and other wildlife lose access to clean water and safe spaces. Additionally, the growing demand for electronics and the mining of precious metals—such as coltan—used in devices leads to deforestation, further encroaching on gorilla habitats.

Gorillas on the Line: A Nationwide Conservation Effort

Gorillas on the Line is a national initiative encouraging the recycling of old electronics to help protect gorilla habitats. Many handheld electronics contain coltan, a mineral mined from regions where gorillas live. The demand for coltan drives habitat destruction, putting gorilla populations at risk. By recycling old devices, we can reduce the need for new mining and support conservation efforts through the Gorilla SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program.

The Little Rock Zoo has participated in this initiative for several years, and we’re excited to continue our efforts. We collect devices year-round, but the official Gorillas on the Line campaign runs from February 1 to September 1. This year, zoos across the country aim to collect 25,000 devices and raise $15,000 for gorilla conservation. Your contribution helps us ‘Answer the Call’ to protect gorillas and their habitats.

How You Can Help

Do you have old cell phones, tablets, or other small electronics collecting dust? Bring them to our drop-off box located at the front entry plaza and contribute to gorilla conservation at the same time.

📌 No Zoo admission is required to drop off your devices. 📆 Collections continue year-round!

Make a Donation

Don’t have any electronics to recycle? You can still make a difference by donating to support the Gorillas on the Line campaign. Every dollar helps protect gorilla habitats, fund research, and support conservation education.

Join us in making a lasting impact—recycle, donate, and help us save gorillas in the wild. Together, we can make a difference!

LITTLE ROCK (March 6, 2025) – The moment you step into the feed room at the Little Rock Zoo, you’re met with a smell that’s hard to describe but instantly recognizable—a mix of earthy grains, sweetened pellets, and the faint tang of vitamins. It’s the warm, slightly dusty scent you’d find in a feed store, filling the air with the promise of nourishment. The tall shelves lining the warehouse-like walls stretch toward the ceiling, stacked with neatly labeled bags of animal feed.

To the right is a short hallway, the walls are lined with more shelves filled with buckets of various sizes. Just past the shelves is a small kitchen where a lone keeper works, chopping and measuring out portions of produce. This is no ordinary kitchen— this kitchen is a cornerstone of the zoo’s animal care system, where each careful chop, scoop, and portion helps ensure the animals receive the nutrition they need.

The Commissary: A Behind-the-Scenes Powerhouse

As the epicenter of the zoo’s nutrition efforts, the commissary is where those carefully crafted meals come to life. This space is a hub of activity, where a small but skilled team works in sync to meet the unique needs of the zoo’s diverse animal residents. The food prepared here follows strict guidelines set by the USDA, FDA, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), ensuring that only human-grade ingredients are used. If it’s not good enough for people, it’s not good enough for our animals.

The work of the commissary team extends far beyond meal preparation. Commissary keepers collaborate closely with animal care staff, using their feedback to adjust diets and ensure each animal’s nutritional needs are met. Keepers provide invaluable insights into the animals’ health, tracking signs like fecal output, which can indicate changes that might require a veterinary checkup. Through this partnership, the entire team can work together to ensure the health of all the zoo’s animal residents.

Balancing Science and Preferences

Designing animal diets is both an art and a science. Each meal is tailored to factors like an animal’s species, natural history, age, sex, body condition, and weight. These diets are guided by expert recommendations from the AZA, Nutrition Research Council (NRC), and peer-reviewed studies, with the help of advanced dietary formulation software.

But science doesn’t always account for individual preferences. Animals, like people, have likes and dislikes, so the nutrition team must strike a balance between what’s nutritious and what’s appetizing.

Attention to Detail

From precise measurements of vegetables, pellets, and insects to exact portions of meat or grains, preparing animal diets is a job that demands care and accuracy. Every ingredient is carefully weighed, scheduled, and inspected to ensure freshness and safety. Collaboration between the commissary team, veterinarians, and keepers ensures that meals meet each animal’s specific requirements.

Why It Matters

Nutrition is fundamental to every aspect of an animal’s life, influencing growth, health, reproduction, and even behavior. The Little Rock Zoo’s commitment to providing carefully crafted diets supports the well-being of its residents and sets a high standard in animal care.

See the Impact for Yourself

Want to witness the results of this dedication? Visit the Little Rock Zoo and meet the animals benefiting from these thoughtfully prepared meals. Whether it’s a gorilla savoring leafy greens or a lizard eating insects, every bite reflects the care, science, and teamwork that go into feeding the zoo’s incredible residents.

LITTLE ROCK (February 24, 2025) – In November 2024, three staff members from the Little Rock Zoo joined a team of animal care staff and veterinarians to travel to India and Sri Lanka with SAFE Sloth Bear. This year’s trip provided an invaluable opportunity to strengthen international partnerships in sloth bear conservation, share expertise, and support ongoing research and community initiatives.

Zoo Staff at the Wildlife SOS’s Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Center.
What is SAFE Sloth Bear?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) programs focus the expertise in AZA-accredited institutions and leverage their audiences to save species. The Little Rock Zoo is a founding member of SAFE Sloth Bear, with leadership by Dr. Laura Bernstein-Kurtycz, Zoo Conservation and Research Coordinator, as Vice Program Leader, and Carnivore Curator Debbie Thompson serving on the Steering Committee.

SAFE Sloth Bear is made up of 12 partner zoos and three international field partners in India and Sri Lanka. In its first year, SAFE Sloth Bear received a grant from AZA to help fund these partners in conducting critical sloth bear research, including preparing to assess sloth bear threat status in the wild. Field partners in both countries are working to create updated sloth bear range maps, which will be essential for assessing population trends and directing future conservation efforts. These data will also guide the next IUCN Red List assessment, expected in 2026. Future projects include supporting research in reducing human-bear conflict in India and learning more about the Sri Lankan sloth bear.

Wildlife SOS: Protecting and Rehabilitating India’s Sloth Bears

Founded in 1995, Wildlife SOS began as a small rescue center in New Delhi, operated by a dedicated team determined to aid wildlife in distress. Today, it has grown into India’s largest wildlife rescue organization, managing 12 centers across the country. Wildlife SOS works to protect India’s wildlife through habitat conservation, biodiversity research, and community engagement—offering sustainable alternatives to those historically dependent on poaching or wildlife exploitation.

One of the organization’s most significant achievements has been the eradication of the practice of ‘dancing’ bears in India. For over 400 years, sloth bears were exploited by the Kalandar community, initially for Mughal emperors and later as roadside entertainment. This practice involved poaching cubs from the wild and forcing a metal ring or rope through their muzzle. When the bear would move to relieve the pressure, it appeared to be “dancing.”

Conservation cannot occur without good faith efforts to work with local communities. Wildlife SOS worked with the Kalandar community to end this practice, by teaching the adults new skills that allowed them to make a living in other ways, and by ensuring that the children could receive an education. Through collaboration with local people, the Indian government, and other organizations, Wildlife SOS successfully rescued and rehabilitated over 620 former dancing bears. As of 2009, the practice was eradicated in India.

The animal care and veterinary staff on the SAFE Sloth Bear project trip worked closely with their counterparts at one of the bear rescue centers managed by Wildlife SOS (WSOS), where 60 of these rescued bears now reside. Many of these aging sloth bears suffer from a variety of medical issues related to the dancing bear trade and their age.

The primary goal was for experienced trainers from SAFE partner zoos to teach Wildlife SOS staff how to better use operant conditioning to allow the bears to participate in their daily and veterinary care. These included:

Training bears to voluntarily present body parts for health checks, like presenting their leg or opening their mouth

Training them for cooperative teeth brushing

Helping them to position themselves and remain still for ultrasounds and blood draws

Desensitizing training with medical equipment and personnel

Many of the rescued bears were eager to participate in training sessions and quickly learned new behaviors. For others, getting comfortable around new people was more of a struggle. However, sometimes, this led to some of the most rewarding accomplishments. In one such success story, the team worked with Ankitha, a bear who had previously refused to enter her den space while any Wildlife SOS staff or veterinarians were present. By the end of the exchange, Ankitha willingly approached the inside door of the den, accepted honey from keepers, and even let the WSOS staff touch her muzzle through the mesh. This small change marks a major milestone that will ultimately allow the WSOS staff to better care for her, while growing confidence in their own skills, opening more opportunities for improved welfare.

A group photo from Sri Lanka, with all of the wildlife vets who attended the workshop organized
by Chandima Fernando, SLWCS. Photo provided by Dr. Laura Bernstein-Kurtycz.

Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society (SLWCS)

As part of their expedition, the team also traveled to Sri Lanka to collaborate with local wildlife officials and researchers, strengthening connections among sloth bear conservationists. This was the first time the members of SAFE Sloth Bear had traveled to Sri Lanka, where the Program Leaders and trip participants met members of the newest field partner, Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society (SLWCS). Their goal was to exchange expertise in wildlife medicine and support research on the country’s sloth bear population. SLWCS has been conducting research on elephants in Sri Lanka for 25 years, but sloth bear research is only just beginning. Further, the team was joined by the founder of the third SAFE Sloth Bear field partner, the Wildlife Conservation Biology Research Foundation. With four staff from Wildlife SOS also making the trip from India with the SAFE team, all of the SAFE Sloth Bear field partners could meet in person for the very first time. The opportunity for all three field partners and SAFE leadership to meet in person was invaluable.

Dr. Stoneburg performs an ultrasound on a giant squirrel during a wildlife medicine workshop in Sri Lanka.

SLWCS organized informational talks for wildlife officials and veterinarians to learn more about sloth bears and wildlife medicine. Dr. Sara Stoneburg, the Little Rock Zoo’s head veterinarian, and Dr. Sarrah Kaye, a veterinarian from Smithsonian’s National Zoo, gave talks for the wildlife veterinarians. Topics included field medicine, wildlife forensics, and how to perform ultrasounds, among others. Dr. Stoneburg also introduced them to newly donated medical equipment, providing training on how to use it effectively for the benefit of the animals in their care.

(Little Rock – February 20, 2025) -I’ve been photographing animals since April of 2022. I started by taking photos of my own animals; I have two dogs, Kida and Balto, and two cats, Stitch and Kakashi. I have loved animals all my life so it made sense to me that animals would be my favorite subject to capture. A few months after taking photos of my own animals, I decided to attend the Little Rock Zoo to practice taking photos of all the amazing animals and hone my skills. I’ve visited the Zoo many times and each time has helped me to better my craft. My husband, Nicholas Love, has been very supportive in my photography endeavors.

So far, I’ve had really good critiques of my photos and I hope to become an even better photographer. One of my biggest dreams would be for my photography to be featured in National Geographic someday.

I’d like to share a story about my most recent trip to the Little Rock Zoo.

The afternoon of Sunday, February 16, was rather chilly when I arrived at the Little Rock Zoo with my camera. Despite the cold, I was determined to capture some up-close photos of the incredible animals. First thing I did after entering the Zoo was head straight to the lion exhibit. I was pleasantly surprised to see Amboseli (the male member of the pride) putting on a show. The noises that this apex predator was making were sending chills down my spine. I found myself staring at this fierce and beautiful animal through my viewfinder-awaiting the perfect moment to snap a picture. Honestly, for a moment, I forgot there was glass separating us. As soon as I saw this picture on the screen of my camera, I knew it’d be the first one I would edit when I returned home.

It’s the best photo I’ve captured of Amboseli.

(Little Rock – February 6, 2025) At the Little Rock Zoo, our work goes beyond providing a space for people to visit and learn about animals. Behind the scenes, we’re deeply involved in research, conservation, and innovative care that benefits wildlife both locally and globally.

Today, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the important work we do and highlighting one of the many ways zoos contribute to research and conservation of species with our participation in the Great Ape Heart Project (GAHP).

The GAHP is a collaborative effort focused on addressing heart disease—the leading health issue affecting gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos in human care. This joint effort allows experts from zoos, veterinarians, and researchers around the globe to work together to better understand, diagnose, and treat cardiovascular disease in great apes. Zoos like ours play a vital role in this initiative by contributing medical data, performing heart health evaluations, and helping to shape care standards that improve the lives of great apes everywhere.

Behind the Scenes: How Zoos Advance Science

What many people may not realize is that modern zoos are hubs of research and collaboration. The Little Rock Zoo is proud to participate in several projects including our work with the GAHP that benefit animals in both human care and in the wild. Our veterinary team has conducted echocardiograms—specialized ultrasound imaging of the heart—on several of our great ape residents.

These procedures allow us to monitor heart health, catch early signs of disease, and ensure that our apes receive care tailored to their specific needs. The data collected here is also shared with GAHP, contributing to a growing body of knowledge that helps improve care for great apes everywhere.

The Bigger Picture: Why Cardiovascular Health Matters

Just like with humans, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading health concerns for great apes, particularly as they age. By participating in the GAHP, zoos are not just responding to health challenges of the animals in their care—they’re driving research that could help save great apes worldwide.

As researchers better understand the factors contributing to heart disease in human care, they can apply that knowledge to conservation programs aimed at protecting wild great apes facing environmental stress, habitat loss, and other challenges.

Zoos as Research Leaders

Projects like the GAHP are a reminder that zoos are more than just places to see animals; they are centers for research, education, and conservation. From studying animal behavior to advancing veterinary care, zoos contribute to science in ways that the public may not always see. Every visit, membership, and donation support these efforts and helps create a brighter future for wildlife.

LITTLE ROCK (December 19, 2024) – The Little Rock Zoo is thrilled to welcome two special guests, Bhalu and Kayla, who arrived on November 25, 2024, from the Philadelphia Zoo. These two sloth bears will be with us temporarily while the Philadelphia Zoo renovates its sloth bear habitat. Their stay, expected to last about a year, is a shining example of how zoos collaborate to prioritize animal welfare and the conservation of species.

Meet Bhalu and Kayla

Bhalu, a male, and Kayla, a female, are a breeding pair who have temporarily joined our Zoo family. With their arrival, the Little Rock Zoo now houses six sloth bears—the largest group of this species at any AZA-accredited zoo in the United States!

Kayla’s arrival is particularly exciting because of her special connection to Little Rock. She is the sister of Sahaasa, a sloth bear who joined us in 2018. Both siblings were born at the Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls in November 2012, making this a reunion of sorts for our sloth bear family.

Species Spotlight: The Unique Sloth Bear

Native to India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, sloth bears are remarkable creatures with many unique characteristics. Known for their shaggy coats and distinctive whitish “V” or “Y” markings on their chests, they stand out among bear species.

Sloth bears are primarily nocturnal and have a specialized diet of termites, ants, fruits, and honey. Using their curved claws and powerful jaws, they expertly extract food, even closing their nostrils to keep out dust or insects while raiding termite mounds. They are skilled climbers and often forage for food in trees, adding to their adaptability.

One of their most endearing traits is their parenting behavior—sloth bears are the only bear species that routinely carry their cubs on their backs. Combined with their noisy, busy foraging habits, marked by grunts and snorts, these bears are endlessly captivating to observe.

The name “sloth bear” has an unexpected origin

Sloth bears are a fascinating species, and they even have a place in popular culture. In Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Baloo was a sloth bear. The character’s name comes from the Hindi word bhalu (pronounced Baloo), which means “bear.” While bhalu refers to bears in general, it often signifies sloth bears in the Indian subcontinent, where they are the only native bear species.

The name “sloth bear,” however, has a more surprising origin. In 1791, European zoologist George Shaw mistakenly classified these unique bears as relatives of the Central and South American sloths due to their long, curved claws, missing front teeth, and occasional ability to hang upside down in trees. Believing them to be “bear-like sloths,” he gave them the name Bradypus ursinus, connecting them to the sloth genus.

Later research confirmed that sloth bears are true bears, leading to a new classification under the family Ursidae. The common name evolved as “bear sloth” flipped to “sloth bear,” though the original misclassification still influences its quirky name today.

Why They Matter

Sloth bears play a vital role in maintaining the health of their habitats, and their conservation is crucial to the ecosystem. As important seed dispersers, they help to regenerate forests and sustain the plant life that other species depend on. By foraging for termites and ants, sloth bears also contribute to controlling insect populations, which can otherwise damage vegetation. In this way, sloth bears support biodiversity and help maintain a balanced ecosystem, ensuring the survival of many plant and animal species in their range.

However, sloth bears are listed as vulnerable due to several pressing threats, including habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. Urbanization and deforestation have fragmented their natural habitats, while conflicts with humans over crops or livestock create additional challenges. Sloth bears are often persecuted when they venture into human settlements in search of food, and poaching and the illegal pet trade further jeopardize their survival.

The Little Rock Zoo is actively involved in efforts to protect sloth bears. One example is by our providing a temporary home for Bhalu and Kayla, our new sloth bear residents. Further, with our collaborations with other accredited zoos, we contribute to breeding programs and offer educational experiences that highlight the challenges sloth bears face in the wild. By engaging the public in these efforts, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of conserving these fascinating creatures and protecting their natural habitats.

Additionally, we are proud to partner with organizations like Wildlife SOS, who are doing incredible work to protect sloth bears and other species in India. In fact, some of our staff members are currently visiting India, where they are working directly with Wildlife SOS to support their efforts on the ground. We look forward to sharing more details of this partnership with our readers in a future blog post. This is just one more example of how we strive to make a meaningful impact in conserving our natural world.
